Aims & Objectives
The aim of the project is to create a local archive that will help further interest and awareness, to remember and honour the role played by volunteers from the North West of Ireland who participated in the International Brigades. Volunteers who were ordinary working class people who came together in a foreign land, sacrificing their lives for an ideal, in defense of the Spanish Republic as we approach its 70th anniversary in July 2006.
Immediate aimOur immediate aim is to create an Internet archive of information (news stories, interviews etc) and material (news clippings, books, photographs etc) to assist the above aim.
How you can help? Our project would like to hear from anyone from the North West who had a family member, a brother, an uncle or a grandfather etc who took part in the international resistance to share their stories and information, to pay tribute and to honour their memories. We also welcome anyone who would like to assist us by creating further information for the project to please get in touch.
Long term goalTo create a fitting and lasting memorial or monument in the North West to those who fought in defense of the Spanish Republic from 1936 to 1938. (Proposal for such a goal has been entered as July 2006) That date will mark the 70th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War. To this end, project need to formally obtain a back account to fund such a goal after the creation of a formal committee consisting of relatives and supportive members of the local public. Please do not hesitate to contact the project (via email: xvbrigade@yahoo.ie) if you would like to assist the above aims and objectives, with corrections on this website, give additional information or material from personal stories or photographs to newspaper clippings etc.
