who served in defence of the Spanish Republic 1936-1938

Micheál O’Riordan

Micheál O’Riordan

12th Nov. 1917 - 18th May 2006

The North West Spanish Civil War Project notes with deep sadness the passing of Micheál O’Ríordan, veteran of the Connolly Column, XVth International Brigade.

In 1938, Micheál went to fight against General Franco’s fascist forces in Spain and was wounded on the Gandesa front, battle of the Ebro. He received a citation for particularly outstanding bravery under fire during fighting.

A veteran member and former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Ireland, and an active trade unionist Micheál was a leading figure in the fight for social justice und will be missed by many.

He was also the author of ‘The Connolly Column. The story of the Irishmen who fought for the Spanish Republic, 1936-1939’, and a honorary citizen of Spain.

We salute his memory.
